A Story of Ultraman – Rich Roll

It was the year 2006, and the thirty-nine-year-old had it all. Rich Roll had a fabulous career as an entertainment lawyer. He is from Stanford. He could go anywhere he would like from Harvard to Princeton.

Then, the night before his fortieth birthday, while climbing the stairs of his home, Rich felt uneasy and started sweating. He had to stop to catch the breath. Rich realized that the years of unhealthy food and workaholism that had packed fifty extra pounds onto his body were taking their price.

After years of struggling with alcoholism and eventually obesity, Roll decided at age 40 to become an ultra-endurance athlete.

Switching to clean living and a plant-based diet, Roll became a top finisher at the 2008 and 2009 Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii, and in 2009 Men’s Fitness Magazine named Roll as one of the top 25 fittest men in the world.

Then, in 2010, Roll completed the Epic 5 Challenge, which entailed completing five Ironman-distance triathlons on five islands of Hawaii in less than a week.

In September 2017, Rich completed the OTELLO Swimrun World Championship. It is considered one of the most challenging endurance events in the world. In this competition, athletes need to swim and run forty-six miles across twenty-six islands. Rich team took almost eleven hours to finish. But the champion team took only eight hours.

During his interview with the New York Times, he agreed the race was the toughest thing he had done in his running career. But he also added the competition taught one of the crucial leanings that “The main thing is realizing that even if you feel terrible for a while, that’s not how you are going to feel the whole time……. Things change if you just keep moving”.

He did all these extraordinary things at the age of forty-fore, and within four years he had done a 360 degree turn around in his life. He transformed himself from a high paid entertainment lawyer to a role model in the running platform. This writing is for those in the middle age and thinking that his/her time is over!!

I am incredibly motivated and start to feel that I can live a life that is at least meaningful to me. I do not want to say at the end of my life

“Yes, I could do!!!” “I could be better than…..”

I want to do it now. If I fail to do, then it does not matter……..
